Texas representative seeks to protect incumbents

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Here is the letter I sent Texas representative Jim Pitts (R-Waxahachie) regarding his candidacy for the Texas Speaker of the House.

Rep. Pitts,

I am deeply disappointed with your comment reported in the Statesman: “I will go out and help 149 members . . . get re-elected, whether Republican or Democrat.

Since when has protecting incumbents been an honorable way to represent your constituents? This statement is appalling, and reflects your apparent desire to remain in power, and protect other politicians, above all else.

You and your staff should be ashamed of yourselves. Your constituents and other Texans deserve better.

Iraq Study Group report is out

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

Here is the story.

Bush says he will take it seriously.

He also urged members of Congress to take the report seriously, but he said that neither Congress nor his administration were likely to agree with every proposal by the study group.

Bush did not provide any details of the recommendations, but some of them have been outlined by knowledgeable sources in recent days.

Robert Kaplan writes in the Atlantic Monthly,

The Administration should co-opt this report—with adjustments, of course. Once again, ignoring some of the sound bites, read completely it is not an especially hostile document from the viewpoint of the Administration. It cries out to be partially plagiarized by the President. If he does not do this, then he will be truly on his own, utterly isolated. The report says that the main benefit of gradually reducing our military footprint in Iraq will be to free up forces to secure Afghanistan. For it isn’t just Iraq that is in the balance, but Afghanistan, too.
