ISI packs the house in DC

Friday, January 19th, 2007

This Thursday, ISI hosted T. Kenneth Crib at our monthly “Conservatism on Tap.” He spoke about the history of the conservative movement, and how we have fractured in many ways recently.

We had a great turnout. Over 120 people attended the event.

The next event should be even better, with Senator Sam Brownback, who is a Presidential hopeful, speaking about how we must revive the conservative spirit in this country.

If you want to attend, please email me at bsteinhauser @ freedomworks.org

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Every year I read books for school, books recommended by friends or books that I have wanted to read for a long time.

I also write them down every year and go back and think about their ideas, and how they influenced my thinking.

Mitt Romney supported abortion in 1994

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

Who is the conservative candidate for 2008? Some say it is Gov. Mitt Romney from Massachusetts.
Red State has a great video from 1994 that exposes Romney’s liberal past. He came out in support of abortion and other liberal social issues. This raises serious doubts about Romney’s conservative credentials for the 2008 Presidential election.
Here it is.

Chavez to nationalize industries, erode freedoms

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

The actions of Venezuelan socialist strongman Hugo Chavez should remind freedom-lovers everywhere of the danger of authoritarianism around the world.

His comments are frightening in their disregard for freedom, free enterprise and free trade. He is dismantling the right of the press to say what it wants, and the right of people to own and keep what they earn.

Here is the story. Excerpts from the story are below.

– “We’re heading toward socialism, and nothing and no one can prevent it.” — Hugo Chavez
– Last week, Chávez decided to not renew the broadcast license of RCTV, a Caracas television station long critical of his administration. That move prompted swift condemnation from press freedom groups.

– “I move forward with my request for a revolutionary enabling law,” he said. “We already have the document prepared. We are making the final revisions, and we solicit special powers.”

Texas Legislature convenes Tuesday, Jan. 9th

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

The Austin American-Statesman has the story here.

Lawmakers want to spend the $15 billion surplus. Please contact your state representative and senator and ask them to return the surplus to taxpayers. After all, WE earned it, not them.

Also, this session I will be supporting the repeal of the top ten percent law that grants high school students automatic admission to state universities. It has led to overcrowding in my alma mater, UT-Austin, and elsewhere. Please contact your state rep. and senator and ask them to support the repeal of this law.
