Senator Jim DeMint Talks Earmarks on the Senate Floor

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) did a great job laying out the earmark debate on the Senate floor today.

Watch the VIDEO.

We are working with Senator DeMint to convince his colleagues to vote for a one year earmark moratorium. FreedomWorks also has a No Earmarks Pledge that we are circulating. Make sure that your Senators and Congressmen see the pledge!

Red State rightly endorses Paul Broun for Congress

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Red State has endorsed Congressman Paul Broun for the 10th district of Georgia. Broun currently represents the district formerly held by the late Charlie Norwood.

Broun is a staunch conservative and one of the most dedicated pro-life congressmen around. Anyone that supports economic liberty and is an opponent of abortion should do what they can to help Broun get re-elected.

The primary race will be a tight one, and conservatives need to unite quickly behind Paul Broun to ensure that he remains a strong ally for conservatives in Congress.

Victor Davis Hanson on Barack Obama

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Professor Victor Davis Hanson has a good piece on National Review online about Barack Obama entitled “Let Obama be Obama.”

Here is an excerpt:

He favors re-negotiating NAFTA and threatening to raise some trade barriers, on the premise the United States cannot compete abroad — and that other countries won’t follow suit and retaliate.

His version of the war on terror is largely a story of lost civil liberties and eroding the Constitution, not that we’ve done something right these past six years to prevent another 9/11.

He’s spoken of the surge as a failure — not a success that has stabilized Iraq and paved the way for a downsizing soon of American troops there.

And he believes Iran has grown into a threat not just because of its desire to spread radical Islam, acquire the bomb, destabilize its neighbors, and destroy Israel, but also in large part due either to our presence in Iraq or to our diplomatic failure to talk and engage with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

And here is the money quote:

The irony is that Obama really does offer a change — not just in matters of youth, race, and eloquence, but also in that we have not seen such a leftish philosophy on the national scene in over a generation.

Well put, Professor Hanson.

It’s definitely worth reading the entire article.

Obama foreign policy advisor admits he is not ready for “3AM call”

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Talk about a bad t.v. appearance from someone who is supposed to make her candidate appear ready to be commander-in-chief.

Watch the video of Susan Rice, an Obama foreign policy advisor, admit that neither Hillary Clinton nor Barack Obama are ready for “the 3:00am phone call” in the White House. I certainly hope John McCain pounces on this little gem.

The surge is working

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Red State has a good post about the surge in Iraq. They link over to a story in a New York Times blog post entitled “Taking Back a Qaeda Stronghold” that notes,

Jihadists flourished here, American commanders say, manufacturing car bombs and sending them up the road for the short trip into the capital.

But last year, violence fell drastically. American commanders cite three main reasons: the United States troop surge, which provided the combat power to take on the insurgents, the decision to withdraw troops from large bases far outside Iraqi towns and put them closer to the population, and the decision by local Sunnis to follow the model of the Anbar Province tribal Awakening by turning against Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia and cooperating with the Americans to fight it.

The town that the blogger is describing is Arab Jabour, which was once an al Qaeda stronghold. As Red State points out, if we were to leave when Senator Obama wants us to, it would make it easier for al Qaeda to take this area back.

Texas v. Ohio

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

The Wall Street Journal explains why Texas is doing well economically and Ohio is not.

Ohio now ranks 47th out of 50 in economic competitiveness, according to the American Legislative Exchange Council. Ohio politicians deplore plant closings even as they impose the third highest corporate income tax in the country (10.5%) and the sixth highest personal income tax (8.87%). A common joke is that Ohio lays out the red carpet for companies — when they leave the state. By contrast, Texas has no income tax, a huge competitive advantage.

It’s instructive to read the whole article. The Journal points out that NAFTA has been great for Texas and that the unions in Ohio make it a less attractive state for businesses.
