Fringe Leftists attack McCain’s war record

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Leftist lunatic Medea Benjamin
The left is going to regret ever bringing up a discussion about national security readiness. Barack Obama has ZERO experience commanding troops, and as a subcommittee chairman on the war in Afghanistan he didn’t hold hearings to find out what is going on there. McCain’s story is well-known. He will win any argument about national security.

But, as Politico reports, leftist lunatics like Noam Chomsky, Counterpunch and Medea Benjamin are questioning his foreign policy acumen.

Critics have accused McCain of war crimes for bombing targets in Hanoi in the 1960s. A widely read liberal blog on Sunday accused McCain of “disloyalty” during his captivity in Vietnam for his coerced participation in propaganda films and interviews after he’d been tortured.

It’s sad how silent the left was when Jane Fonda was willingly making propaganda for the communist Vietnamese. Left-wing insanity never surprises me.

DC Gun Ban Overturned

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Although it seems like more and more freedom is slipping away every day, the Supreme Court handed down a 5-4 decision today that essentially overturns the unconstitutional DC gun ban.

Here is the most important finding:
The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense at home.

Below are some good commentaries on the decision.

New video slams Senator Chuck Grassley for Snooping on Americans

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

This video calls on anyone who uses eBay, Amazon.com or other online stores to speak out against a sneaky attempt to build a government database on American citizens. Senator Chuck Grassley slipped a provision in the Senate Housing bill that would allow the federal government to track the online transactions of millions of Americans. Scary stuff.

For more background, which the video doesn’t provide, read this.

Here is the video.

Barack Obama is just another politician

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

For a candidate that preaches so much about “changing Washington” Barack Obama has proved himself once again to be just another Washington politician. One of the most fundamental reforms he talks about is ridding the system of lobbyists and special interests. He and John McCain both support restrictions on political speech in the form of campaign finance laws.

For the record I think they are both wrong for supporting an unconstitutional measure to restrict free speech. But what makes it worse for Obama is that he is also a hypocrite. At least McCain is going to take public financing this election year. But Obama announced this week that he would forgo public financing and instead rely upon private donations to fund his campaign. The reason? He blames it on 527’s and other “outside groups” that will be running ads and educating the public from their point of view. But as The New York Times and The Politico have pointed out, there is no real presence on the right that is ready to attack Obama through a massive ad campaign. He just needs to place the blame on someone else while deflecting criticism away from his own hypocrisy. Even The Washington Post agrees that Obama’s excuse for not taking public financing like he promised is ridiculous.

So much for the politics of “change.” Obama is just another politician. For someone running on a platform of fundamentally reforming the system, Obama sure seems to be comfortable saying one thing while doing another.

Here is a sampling of coverage of the Dodd/Countrywide Mortgage Scandal that continues to threaten the fate of the mortgage bailout bill before Congress. The vote could happen as soon as today, but the scandal might make senators think twice about bringing the bill up in this climate.

Finally, here are some links to other news outlets covering the story.

Senate Countrywide Mortgage Scandal

Monday, June 16th, 2008

The Wall Street Journal explains today that Senator Chris Dodd and Senator Kent Conrad received special “VIP” treatment from Countrywide, a company that has been heavily criticized in the sub-prime mortgage “crisis.” It turns out that while Senators Dodd and Conrad were self-righteously railing against companies that offered sub-prime loans, they were refinancing their homes with special deals from Countrywide that the average American did not have access to.

Now, these Senators are backing a $300 billion bailout of lenders and borrowers who made bad decisions on mortgages. Countrywide stands to gain a lot from the bailout, which is raising concerns about who else in the Senate received such special treatment. You can find out by calling your senators at 866-928-3035 and asking them. Post comments below if you talk to anyone in their offices.

UPDATE: Representative Jeb Hensarling is calling for hearings on the matter.

I think we all can agree that it would be wrong for Members of Congress to get special treatment on their mortgages simply because they are elected office holders. That’s why next week I will be sending a letter to the Speaker and the appropriate chairman with oversight requesting hearings on this issue. We must ensure that no Member is inappropriately benefiting from their position.
