Report from Tampa Bay

I left this morning at about 10am and flew to Tampa, Florida. I’m here to teach a grassroots politics seminar for FreedomWorks members and local conservative activists in the Tampa Bay area. Unfortunately, it’s raining and I haven’t been able to do too much, other than prepare my presentation for tomorrow. The Super Bowl is here on Sunday, but I’ll be gone late tomorrow night, so I’ll avoid the craziness. People here have been very friendly and welcoming to visitors. It’s clear that they are excited about the Super Bowl on Sunday.

For tomorrow’s talk, I plan to encourage conservatives to rebuild the movement from the ground up. We need to get more active in our communities, recruit new members to our cause and take action as often as we can to make an impact on the local, state and federal levels of government.

I’ll be talking a little bit about Saul Alinsky and his methods of organizing, as well as FreedomWorks’ long history of fighting for lower taxes and less government across the country. I’ll be encouraging everyone to put some heat on GOP senators, urging them to stand up against the liberals in Congress and the presidency, by stopping the so-called “stimulus plan.”

I’m looking forward to meeting with the local activists here, and hopefully helping them become more effective advocates for freedom.

Benicio del Toro walks out on tough questions

This is an interesting piece in The Washington Times about how actor Benicio del Toro walked out of a press conference about his new movie, “Che.” Apparently, del Toro doesn’t want to deal with the moral dilemma of portraying and defending a communist murderer who told his followers to learn how to hate, and become killing machines.

Mr. del Toro doesn’t deny that Guevara’s persona had some darker aspects. “We have to omit a lot of stuff about his life,” he said, “but we’re not omitting the fact that he’s for capital punishment, which is the essence of that.”

In the movie, Guevara is shown executing a man. But the man is executed for raping a child, not for being disloyal to the cause of revolution. Troops are offered a chance to desert, and get nothing more than a scolding for their cowardice.

March for Life 2009

Today in Washington a large crowd of pro-life activists is marching down Pennsylvania Avenue and over to the Supreme Court. There are thousands of people all over the place, holding pro-life signs, handing out stickers and buttons and marching down the street. Unfortunately, the media probably will not pay much attention to this annual rally that brings thousands to D.C.

The March for Life is a week-long event with a conference, dinner and prayer sessions. The march started about thirty minutes ago, and will end at the Supreme Court building.

Here are the pictures!

Here comes socialism

Today is the first full day under the Obama presidency. While I wish him the best when it comes to defending our country against our enemies, I also fear what he will do to move us toward socialism in America.

Dick Morris, (not my favorite writer, but interesting nonetheless) has a piece in The Hill newspaper, describing what Obama will do to make us more like France and Sweden, and less like the free country we are.

And he will so sharply cut taxes on the middle class and the poor that the number of Americans who pay no federal income tax will rise from the current one-third of all households to more than half. In the process, he will create a permanent electoral majority that does not pay taxes, but counts on ever-expanding welfare checks from the government. The dependency on the dole, formerly limited in pre-Clinton days to 14 million women and children on Aid to Families with Dependent Children, will now grow to a clear majority of the American population.

I hope that Morris is wrong, and that Obama proves to be a centrist president, but I fear that he will move his left-wing agenda forward in the name of “saving the economy.” Only time will tell, but in the mean time, Americans should be aware of what they chose in 2008.

The Earth has cooled since 1998

As John Foren notes in his column, 650 of the world’s best climatologists spoke out recently against the propaganda machine of the global warming alarmists. In fact, studies are indicating that we could be heading toward another ice age, in about 100,000 years. This flies in the face of the projections of catastrophic global warming by the alarmists.

At December’s U.N. Global Warming conference in Poznan, Poland, 650 of the world’s top climatologists stood up and said man-made global warming is a media generated myth without basis. Said climatologist Dr. David Gee, Chairman of the International Geological Congress, “For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming?”

You can read the entire column here. It appears that the global warming alarmists are finally on defense now. Their overblown claims have discredited their movement, and given skeptics the space to speak out with credibility about the issue. One very interesting point worth noting, is that CO2 levels are rising, even as the Earth is cooling, which flies in the face of the alarmist argument. It appears that CO2 levels actually rise after the Earth’s temperature rises. This devastates the case of the alarmists, and should make everyone take a deep breath before buying into the overblown claims of the alarmists.

FreedomWorks challenges TARP on constitutional grounds

We’ve had a crazy day here at the office answering emails and phone calls about our plans to challenge the constitutionality of the Paulson Plan (TARP.) So far, the story has been picked up by The New York Times, Bloomberg News, UPI, the American Bar Association and conservative radio show host Rush Limbaugh.

You can read our legal analysis of the TARP program, and then let us know your thoughts. Somebody has to defend the constitution in these frightening times, and thankfully our Chairman, Dick Armey, is showing great leadership on this issue.

Climate Confusion-Debunking Global Warming

I just finished an excellent book by University of Alabama – Huntsville meteorologist Dr. Roy Spencer. The book is called “Climate Confusion” and was a New York Times Bestseller. Dr. Spencer argues that many scientists and politicians have greatly exaggerated the issue of global warming, and can only use ad hominem attacks against skeptical scientists like Dr. Spencer, since their case is crumbling into pieces.

Check out Dr. Spencer’s great new blog, and be sure to pick up a copy of this concise, hard-hitting book. Dr. Spencer makes a compelling case that most of the warming trend of late is probably due to natural variability. He believes that man’s contribution to the warming trend is likely insignificant, and may only increase the global average temperature by a few degrees the next century. That is of course, based on the premise that we won’t develop new technologies in the next few decades that significantly reduce our use of fossil fuels for our energy needs.

But Dr. Spencer is optimistic that resourceful people will develop cost effective technologies that will lessen the amount of CO2 we emit into the air. What’s more, Dr. Spencer argues that the so-called solutions to global warming are extremely costly and ineffective anyway. So why destroy our economy further while also preventing the developing world from coming out of poverty and increasing its standard of living? He notes that radical environmentalists have done more harm than good by preventing the use of DDT, which has led to the deaths of millions of people in Africa.

I highly recommend Dr. Spencer’s book to all those who want to get a scientist’s perspective on global warming, and an alternative view from the likes of Al Gore and his minions.

10 Questions About the Economic Stimulus Bill

Brian Riedl over at the Heritage Foundation has a good piece up about Obama’s debt plan, the so-called “economic stimulus bill.” His 10 questions are worth reading through in entirety. Below is the first one.

President-elect Obama claims that spending approximately $800 billion will create 3.675 million new jobs. That comes to $217,000 per job. This doesn’t sound like a very good value, especially with the national average salary around $40,000. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just mail each of these workers a $40,000 check?

Obama’s debt plan is a complete waste of money. We would be better off if Congress passed the Republican Study Committee’s “Economic Recovery and Middle Class Relief Act of 2009.” You can read about it here.

Obama’s plan to grow government

The current economic situation is tough. I, like millions of Americans, have lost lots of money that I put into my 401k. Unemployment is creeping up, and consumer confidence is so low that people are actually saving money. (Not entirely a bad thing!)

Unfortunately, Americans voted to put liberals in charge of the presidency and Congress. This couldn’t come at a worse time. They plan to use the economic troubles as an excuse to push forward their tired, old big government agenda of socialized medicine, “green collar” jobs and massive pork barrel projects. Not to mention borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars to give to big corporations like banks and the failing auto industry.

All this is being done in the name of a Keynesian economic “stimulus” package, which history shows has never worked, and will never work to create real wealth. If the liberals think that putting more money in the economy will boost spending, and therefore production, then why not give the American people their money back by implementing a flat tax, instead of borrowing the money? If the federal government would just get out of the way, reduce spending and lower the tax rate to, say 10% for everyone who pays taxes, we would see our economy recover soon. Instead, the government is going to intervene in the economy in an unprecedented way and likely prolong the recession, the same way that Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal prolonged the Great Depression.

Will the politicians ever learn? Probably not, unless they all were to read something by Thomas Sowell or Henry Hazlitt. Wishful thinking, I know.

Ron Paul and Dick Armey talk economics and politics on Fox News

Watch this clip from Fox News of Dick Armey and Ron Paul discussing the current economic troubles, and what caused them. If only we had 435 legislators in Washington that shared their views!
