CNN: We plan to cover the tea parties

I just got off the phone with a reporter from CNN Radio in Atlanta. He interviewed me about the upcoming taxpayer tea parties happening around the country on April 15th. He told me that CNN plans “team coverage from Los Angeles, Atlanta and Washington.” He noted that CNN Radio covered the Atlanta event, and seemed to want to remind tea partiers of this fact. The reporter said that the movement has exploded and that he expects there to be thousands of people in Atlanta for the tea party protest there.

Let’s hope that CNN does the American people a service by covering these events around the country. My personal belief is that we are a big enough movement now to where they have to cover us.

Sean Hannity to broadcast live from Atlanta Tea Party April 15th

Sean Hannity just announced that he will be broadcasting live from the Atlanta Tax Day Tea Party on April 15th. FreedomWorks has been working with other groups in Atlanta to organize a massive event that evening. We are expecting hundreds to attend, but with this announcement, I wouldn’t be surprised if thousands decided to come out on April 15th.

More info on the Atlanta tax day tea party is here.

UPDATE: Hopefully on Monday I will have some big news about another speaker at the Atlanta tax day tea party. I’m trying to make this happen, but we haven’t booked it yet. I’ll try to lock down the speaker and the rest of the details on Monday.

UPDATE: We just confirmed that FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey will be in Atlanta for the Tax Day Tea Party at the state capitol on April 15th! For more information on the event, visit the Atlanta Tea Party blog.

What to do with your tea bags?

There has been an email circulating the internet about how everyone should send a tea bag to Washington on April 1st to protest the bailouts, wasteful spending and tax increases coming from Washington. But these tea bags will never get through the mail system. A better approach would be for all Americans who want to make a difference to gather up hundreds or thousands of tea bags and then form groups to march up to congressional offices in each district, and hand deliver the tea bags to the district office staff. If you do this, be sure to make a big scene by chanting slogans, inviting the media to accompany you and picking up citizens along the way to join you.

Mailing tea bags to Congress or the President won’t send as loud a signal as showing up in district offices and hand delivering them after a long, public march through the streets of your city. We have to keep the pressure on these guys, and demand that they change their ways. Our protests must grow louder, bigger and more widespread. We can get there together.

Also, here are the best web sites for those loooking for tea parties to attend in the next few weeks.

Community Organizing and Obama’s Budget

As the Washington Post reports, Obama’s DNC-backed grassroots group, Organizing for America, is launching a massive campaign to build public support for Obama’s budget proposal. This “block by block, door by door” approach to policy advocacy, is what I’ve been trying to get the right to do to oppose Obama’s agenda. If we fail to employ the same grassroots tactics and strategies that Organizing for America is using, we will get our clocks cleaned in the court of public opinion on the Obama agenda. Read the entire article to get a sense of how Obama’s group is using petitions to build a massive grassroots network to support his agenda.

Why the right needs to organize

The anger among fiscal conservatives and moderates is growing by the day. The spontaneous tea party movement is exploding as people look for a way to publicly display their discontent. And my inbox is full of email from people who are looking to get involved in the fight for our nation’s financial future, which looks grim.

At the same time many conservatives and libertarians are trying to find ways to get involved to stop the Obama debt train, the DNC has the benefit of an organized campaign to support Obama’s budget proposal. This campaign is made up mostly of Obama’s supporters and donors during the campaign last year, and is called Organizing for America. The list has about 10 million people on it, out of which half a million have pledged to take an active role in agitating for “change.”

In order to go toe to toe with Organizing for America and MoveOn.org, of which their is admittedly some overlap in membership, the right has got to focus on organizing for liberty. Luckily there are groups like FreedomWorks, Campaign for Liberty, Young Americans for Liberty and National Taxpayers Union that can alert their memberships to take action against the Obama agenda of higher taxes and astronomical spending. But these groups must present a united front and must tell their members to reach out into their own communities to find new people who have not been active, but who should become active. Many citizens are just fed up with all the spending and couldn’t care less about either political party. These folks are ripe for recruitment to organizations that care about liberty, limited government and personal responsibility. It is our job to find these people, recruit them, train them and mobilize them against the socialism descending upon our country. The right cannot build a big enough organization to take on the left without reaching out to new people and giving them a voice through the various organizations. Only by bringing the otherwise apolitical folks into our camps can we build a big enough movement to derail some of the plans of the “chosen one” and save our country from looking like Sweden or France.

Video explaining the tea party movement’s beginning

Hat tip to Thunder Pig for posting this video from my talk in Franklin, NC this weekend. I was down there teaching a grassroots seminar, and discussing how conservatives can learn and apply the tactics of the left to our cause.

Local blogger Thunder Pig was in attendance and shot video of my explanation of the tea party movement, and how it all got started. I had a great time in Franklin, as well as Winston-Salem and Morehead City. The folks in North Carolina are fired up and planning tea parties across the state, with the biggest one set for Charlotte on April 4th!

The Tea Party Conspiracy Theory and the Real Story

Before getting into the paranoid left-wing conspiracy theory about the tea party movement sweeping the nation, I wanted to post the audio from my interview today on G. Gordon Liddy’s radio show. He asked me about the tea party movement, which I explained for his listeners. It went really well, and is about 18 minutes into this podcast.

Left wing bloggers and two hack writers at Playboy’s blog are alleging that there is a giant Koch Industries conspiracy behind the tea party movement sweeping the nation. They argue that Rick Santelli of CNBC, the Koch Foundation and FreedomWorks somehow conspired to run an “astroturf” campaign to oppose president Obama’s massive spending and bailout plans. These guys actually think that the plan was hatched last year before Obama was elected, and “sleeper blogs” were created to be ready for the Santelli rant, which would activate an apparent grassroots movement against Obama’s policies.

The willingness to believe this ridiculous conspiracy is almost as bad as the unwillingness to believe that hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of Americans are quite mad about the Bush/Obama bailouts and massive spending during the last year. Although I have played a big role in the organization and direction of the tea party movement nationally, if there were not angry citizens to lead all the local protests, I wouldn’t be able to organize anything. The outrage is real, and the people emailing me by the hundreds asking to get involved with the tea party movement are real.

Just watch a few of the videos from around the country and you will see that regular people are coming out by the hundreds now, (and the thousands I assure you, in the next few weeks) to express their frustration and dismay about the bankrupting of our country, regardless of which political party is in power. You can’t force the folks to come out and speak up against what is going on. They are just fed up and looking for outlets to vent, and to organize to hold the politicians accountable. FreedomWorks just happens to be a grassroots machine with a long history of educating, training, motivating and mobilizing thousands of regular people to fight for what they believe in. We have tapped into a real anger out there, and we are very good at organizing, both online and offline, so that we empower the grassroots to be more effective advocates.

How did this tea party movement get started, then? Well, it started with the power of an idea, like most movements. FreedomWorks was the first group to call for the American people to take to the streets in protest, even before the stimulus bill passed Congress. We saw that the phone calls, emails and letters were doing some good, but not enough to make the point. So we asked our members and the American people to head to main streets in cities across the country and demonstrate against the wasteful spending in Washington. They heeded our call, first in Fort Myers, Florida, and later in other cities. Then, last week Rick Santelli called for a Chicago Tea Party this summer. That statement galvanized the people who were already upset and gave us a theme for our protests. The tea party movement took off, and it is growing every day, with events planned in places big and small.

If the lefty bloggers think all of this is just a contrived plot, they are mistaken. And if they think that only a few people are manufacturing events to sway public opinion, they are wrong. The public is opposed to the bailout nation, and high taxes, and they are ready to take to the streets in protest. I know this because I have corresponded with hundreds of people around the country in the last week who want to throw their own tea parties in the weeks leading up to tax day on April 15th. I will be working with them, encouraging them, suggesting ideas and helping them promote their events. But I assure you that the people they bring to our dozens of events planned over the next few weeks will be truly angry, and will be out there on their own volition to make their voice heard. FreedomWorks is here to ensure that the forgotten man in this equation is finally heard. And that is why people are contacting us every day to get help and advice so that they can help us put an end to the socialist madness descending upon our country.

Tax Day Tea Parties Planned for April 15th

For those of you wondering what will come after the tea parties of this past weekend, here is your answer. The movement is planning for a nationwide Tax Day Tea Party on April 15th, 2009 in dozens of cities across the country.

FreedomWorks will be helping to organize local activists again, but this time, our focus will be on tax day, and many of our tea parties will be held at post offices around the country. What better time to tap into the public’s anger about paying income taxes than tax day? What better location then the post offices where the people will mail their tax documents to the government?

The New American Tea Party movement is here to help you organize your own tea party by providing some advice, ideas and guidance. I’m looking forward to working with many people over the next few weeks that share my passion for liberty, and my disdain for big government.

Onward to the next big protest! For those of you who missed the recipe for a good tea party, here is my earlier post on that subject.
