Climate Change schemes debunked
Posted by Brendan in climate change on April 27, 2009
There are a couple of great pieces today in The Washington Post and The New York Times about the “cap and trade” scheme that Congress is debating. The radical environmentalists want you to believe that man-made global warming is real, catastrophic and solvable with cap and trade. Not so fast, says skeptical environmentalist Bjorn Lomborg:
Kyoto-style emissions cuts can only ever be an expensive distraction from the real business of weaning ourselves off fossil fuels. The fact is, carbon remains the only way for developing countries to work their way out of poverty. Coal burning provides half of the world’s electricity, and fully 80 percent of it in China and India, where laborers now enjoy a quality of life that their parents could barely imagine.
And here is Samuelson:
The selling of the green economy involves much economic make-believe. Environmentalists not only maximize the dangers of global warming — from rising sea levels to advancing tropical diseases. They also minimize the costs of dealing with it. Actually, no one involved in this debate really knows what the consequences or costs might be. All are inferred from models of uncertain reliability. Great schemes of economic and social engineering are proposed on shaky foundations of knowledge. Candor and common sense are in scarce supply.
The case for “doing something” to combat “global warming” seems to be melting away. The public ranks global warming as the least of its concerns, according to a recent poll by Pew. And for good reason, since the case has been made by phonies using fear tactics and misinformation.
Al Gore chickens out at Congressional hearing
Posted by Brendan in climate change on April 24, 2009
Apparently the Climate Change hypocrite Al Gore is afraid to have his views publicly challenged by someone who disagrees with him.
UK’s Lord Christopher Monckton, a former science advisor to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, claimed House Democrats have refused to allow him to appear alongside former Vice President Al Gore at a high profile global warming hearing on Friday April 24, 2009 at 10am in Washington. Monckton told Climate Depot that the Democrats rescinded his scheduled joint appearance at the House Energy and Commerce hearing on Friday. Monckton said he was informed that he would not be allowed to testify alongside Gore when his plane landed from England Thursday afternoon.
“The House Democrats don’t want Gore humiliated, so they slammed the door of the Capitol in my face,” Monckton told Climate Depot in an exclusive interview. “They are cowards.”
Public worrying about fictional “global warming” is extremely low, although liberal Democrats want to impose a “cap and trade” scheme that would tax everyone who uses energy in America. Given the current economic situation, and the outrageous spending in Washington that will require future tax hikes, I doubt support for the national energy tax will grow one bit. It’s so sad to watch Al Gore cower from public debates about climate change. But I guess insulating your opinions from public scrutiny is the best way to keep making hundreds of thousands of dollars spreading propaganda that is false.

TV coverage of Atlanta Tea Party

I just got the video clip of CNBC’s Larry Kudlow interviewing FreedomWorks chairman Dick Armey at the Atlanta Tea Party.
And here is his interview with CNN’s Roland Martin.
The truth about the tea parties
Posted by Brendan in FreedomWorks on April 17, 2009
Left-wing conspiracies abound about the national tea party movement. Many on the left call it “astroturf” or fake grassroots. But as I told a blogger over at Verum Serum, this is a real grassroots movement that is growing. I described how I got involved in grassroots politics, and how FreedomWorks assisted in making the tea party movement successful. There are a lot of local organizers, and folks like Eric Odom, Amy Kremer and other national coordinators who deserve a lot of credit for the tea party movement’s success. Unfortunately the leftist media and blogs would prefer to call their work and mine, “astroturf.” The truth is, the tea party movement combined a few important elements, which I will describe in future posts. In the meantime, here is what the blogger at Verum Serum wrote after my interview.
I wrote earlier about the Democrats “astroturfing” charge. This line of attack apparently spread from Think Progress to the NY Times to Talking Points Memo, to the Financial Times and CNN. The organization blamed for this nefarious activity by all these sources is Richard Armey’s Freedom Works.
This afternoon I spoke to Brendan Steinhauser who is the Director of State and Federal Campaigns for Freedom Works. I asked him to respond to some of the charges leveled against Freedom Works by the liberal press.
Brendan started by sharing a bit of his background. He was a student activist at the University of Texas who, learned many of his preferred techniques from the left-wingers on his own campus. Upon graduation, he published a book titled The Conservative Revolution: How to Win the Battle for College Campuses. He joined Freedom Works, which was one of a handful of Republican organizations that opposed the TARP funds last year, even though President Bush supported it.
At Freedom Works, he has a large rolodex of thousands of like minded people around the country, some of whom he has personally trained in protest methods. One of the individuals he trained is a woman named Mary Rakovich of Ft. Myers, Florida. He called her on Feb. 9th and asked if she’d heard that President Obama would be in town the next day for a townhall meeting about the stimulus plan. She had and they discussed the possibility of organizing a protest.
Contrary to the conspiratorial tone of blogs like Think Progress, this was not a secret. In fact, Brendan posted an announcement of the protest, along with his name and phone number, on the Freedom Works website that same day. He posted notice on Free Republic as well under his name, with Mary’s name and number as the contact. He sent notice to Michelle Malkin who made a brief mention of it on her blog. This is what is usually called getting the word out. In my experience, it would be difficult to hold a rally of any kind without this sort of thing.
People came out and the idea of protesting the stimulus caught on around the country. But it wasn’t until Rick Santelli gave his spontaneous “rant” on television, calling for a new tea party, that the idea of holding Tea Parties came into focus. Brendan spoke to some of his key people in various states and found that all of them were eager to make Santelli’s idea a reality. It was that spontaneous.
In the end, Brendan says there were four staff (himself, a web designer, press person, press assistant plus one unpaid intern) who worked to organize the events. He was receiving hundreds of calls and e-mails from people who’d heard about the idea and wanted to do something in their town. He did his best to respond to everyone but, as he described it, the traffic was overwhelming. He noted that he did in fact return Brian Beutler’s call (author of the TPM piece) the same day, but Brian never returned his call.
It’s true that Steve Forbes is a billionaire and sits on the Freedom Works board. But Brendan estimates that, apart from the time of the four staffers, Freedom Works invested a total of $20K in the effort, a significant portion of which was for printing T-shirts. To his knowledge, the $20K didn’t come from Forbes.
My inside political experience is limited, but I know from the event planning I’ve done in the past that $20K and four staff is about what it takes to put on a decent block party for say 1,500-2,000 people. It certainly isnt’ the budget to organize a nationwide day of protest involving hundreds of thousands of people. In other words, there’s no way the numbers add up unless this was genuine grass roots activity.
In fact, it’s hard to imagine how something this big could have been less centrally organized or less well funded than it was. I suspect Paul Krugman earns more in a month than the entire budget Freedom Works devoted to this effort. Of course there were many other groups and individuals involved in promoting the Tea Parties, but that’s really the point. This was not a case of astroturfing. This was a case of like minded people (i.e. anti-tax, anti-bailout people) recognizing the disaffection of millions of Americans with the spending priorities of Capitol Hill and trying to do something about it. To call it “astroturfing” is quite simply a fabrication.
Finally, Brendan wanted to invite any of the press/blog outlets who’ve been accusing him and Freedom Works of astroturfing to call and talk about it with him directly. He offered to put reporters in touch with individuals from any state of their choosing. That way they can feel free to ask those who organized these events what motivated them to do so and who was really behind the effort. No secrets. No plots to deceive. Just call and ask. I already linked Brendan’s number above. What are you waiting for?
Don’t hold your breath, Brendan.
How to deal with left-wing tea party crashers
Posted by Brendan in Protest Warrior on April 11, 2009
Many organizers of Tax Day Tea Parties are fretting about the possibility that ACORN or other socialist groups will be crashing the tea parties next Wednesday. As a conservative who has crashed left-wing protests before, I thought I’d offer some advice.
If you encounter any crashers, the first rule is to ignore them. Let them walk about and hold up their pro-Obama signs. If you don’t draw attention to them, they won’t be able to cause the chaos that they seek to create.
If they are getting to be especially annoying, just kill them with kindness. Designate a few people that can go and welcome them, offer them a bottled water and listen to them talk about why they disagree with you. Smile, nod and pretend that you are interested in hearing what they have to say. If done properly, and depending on the crashers, this very well could neutralize them and keep them from disrupting the tea party.
If the crashers bring offensive signs, which reportedly they will try to do, just politely ask them to leave or get rid of their sign. If they refuse, you should just ask your supporters to distance themselves from the crashers. Let them walk together, but don’t let them mingle in the crowd to where they can make it look like they are with you.
If things are really out of hand, and they are trying to disrupt the event, if you have a permit you can ask them to leave, and if they refuse you can ask the police to remove them. This is my least favorite option, since it makes you look like the aggressor, or someone that is trying to stifle speech that you disagree with. I wouldn’t recommend this option unless you tried the other options to no avail.
The bottom line with crashers is that they are looking to incite a response from you, so that you overreact. Don’t let them play you like this. If everyone stays calm and tries to find a way to ignore and marginalize ACORN and the other crashers on tax day, the movement will be able to get its message out without any serious disruptions or scenes.
Fox News Plans to Cover Tea Parties on April 15th

Thanks to lefty blog Media Matters for bringing this video to my attention. haha
I think it’s hillarious that the lefties think the tea party phenomena isn’t real. They are willing to believe anything conspiratorial about the right.
Updated Map of Tea Parties Across the Country
Posted by Brendan in FreedomWorks on April 9, 2009
We’ve been working hard to update the tea party protest map. We are confident that we have most of the protests listed, although we will inevitably miss many protests because there are so many to keep up with. But we are confident that we have provided a service that Americans from coast to coast (and Alaska/Hawaii) can use to find out where they can attend a tea party protest near them.
April 15th, tax day, is the second round of tea party protests, but the beginning of a mass movement for lower taxes, less government and more freedom. It’s not about Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians or Greens, although the ideals of the organizers tend to reflect our founding fathers’ classical liberalism. The tea party movement is about stopping this train to socialism, which leaders of both political parties have been sending us toward. If you care about your liberty, and the financial security of this country, please find a way to attend one of the hundreds of protests around the country on April 15th.
If you cannot attend in person, please call your Congressman and Senators on tax day to remind them that you vote, you watch how they vote, and you want them to stop spending your hard-earned tax dollars. Good luck to the thousands of organizers out there that have worked hard for weeks to make this day a historic one!
