GOTV this weekend in Virgina and New York
I’m about to head out to do some Get Out the Vote in my neighborhood (Franconia, VA). It’s kind of misty outside, but it’s not cold, so it shouldn’t be too bad. We have a big election on Tuesday here in Virginia. We have a governor’s race, attorney general’s race and every Member of the House of Delegates is up for election. This is the first big test of the conservative grassroots movement since the protests began in early February. I’m confident we can send a big message to the powers that be.
Also, the huge political news of the day is that the liberal Republican in NY-23 dropped out of the race! This opens up the race for conservative Doug Hoffman, whom my boss Dick Armey endorsed recently. Doug has been surging in the polls, and has a good chance to win. If you haven’t been making phone calls yet, please do so now and help turn the tide against big government in America. Visit www.doughoffmanforcongress.com to find out how to help him win.
Enough blogging for now. I’m heading out to do some GOTV and hopefully remind lots of folks to show up on election day, Nov. 3rd. If you’d like to join me this weekend, drop me a line at bstein80@ yahoo.com
Doug Hoffman surging toward victory in NY 23
Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman is gaining on the Democrat Bill Owens, in New York’s 23rd congressional district special election. Check out the Club for Growth’s great new tv ad, which takes Owens to task for being a big-government trial lawyer.
Grassroots activists from around the country are giving money to Doug Hoffman, making phone calls into the district and volunteering on the ground. See what you can do to help Doug by clicking here.
A Report from the Ground – New York Congressional District 23
I flew into Central New York yesterday morning and headed over to the southwestern part of the 23rd congressional district. My colleague and I met with activists in Canastota and Cicero, which are near Syracuse. The grassroots are fired up about Doug Hoffman’s candidacy for Congress. We haven’t seen a single sign for either of his opponents since we’ve been here. But Doug’s volunteers are positive, focused and skillful. Many of them are brand new to politics, and at least a few were inspired by the 9/12 March on Washington to get involved.
Last night FreedomWorks co-sponsored an event with the Central New York 9/12 Project in Cicero. Dick Armey spoke to the group of about 30 in Drivers Village, a former mall that now houses cars and trucks. It seemed like everyone in the group was working hard to get Doug elected to Congress. They talked for quite some time about the need to go door-to-door, make phone calls, wave signs, assign poll watchers for election day (Nov. 3rd) and recruit new volunteers to the campaign. These guys are brand new, but after only a few weeks of a heated campaign, they looked like pros.
I’m fairly confident that because of the ground game Doug will continue to surge upwards in the polls toward election day, and might even win, although the odds have been against him. Hopefully Dick Armey’s endorsement and the media that he is bringing to the election will help voters in NY 23rd see what Armey sees: that Doug is a true conservative, regular Joe that could really make a difference in Washington.
I’ll be hitting the road in a few minutes again, stopping by the towns from Syracuse to Oswego. We plan to meet with more volunteers in the area and give them our GOTV materials and provide a helping hand to ensure that voters in the district hear about where the candidates actually stand in this race. Dick Armey will be traveling on his own with Doug today, for a number of events, including a press conference, lunch and a rally. If the grassroots continue to pound the pavement, and groups like Club for Growth PAC continue to pour much-needed money into the race, I think this race has the potential to be a major blow to big government Republicans and big government Democrats; and it could prove that the “tea party” movement is a force to be reckoned with in electoral politics.
Signing off from Brewerton, NY..
Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman building support in NY-23rd
Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman is building support for his bid to become a Congressman from the 23rd congressional district in New York. The Club for Growth PAC is launching this television ad tomorrow across the district. The Club has spent lots of money trying to make an impact in the race, in which the GOP establishment sold out the grassroots.
Also Dick Armey will be endorsing Mr. Hoffman later this week. Hoffman faces two liberals in the race, one a Democrat and one a Republican. But with conservative grassroots support, Hoffman has a good shot at beating both of them and becoming the next congressman from the 23rd district of New York.
True Conservative Battles GOP and Democrats in New York 23rd Congressional Race
Michelle Malkin and Erick Erickson report on the big race between the liberal Republican, liberal Democrat and the conservative in New York’s 23rd congressional district race. The election is in three weeks, and I’ll be there next week to help FreedomWorks activists do some boots on the ground GOTV.
Meanwhile, the establishment GOP, including Newt Gingrich, Eric Cantor and Pete Sessions, are supporting the liberal Republican over the true conservative candidate.
Hi Caliber’s new music video – “Patriotic People”

Check out Hi Caliber’s new music video, “Patriotic People”, about the 9-12 March on Washington. This is definitely a great anthem for the tea party movement.
Politico article points out tea party movement aims to take over GOP
Posted by Brendan in FreedomWorks on October 11, 2009
Alex Isenstadt of Politico explains that the tea party movement is attempting to knock off big government Republicans and Democrats in favor of conservative, limited government candidates. He interviews FreedomWorks, National Taxpayers Union and Tea Party Patriots, and finds that the GOP establishment is in trouble with members of all three groups.
While the energy of the anti-tax and anti-big government Tea Party movement may yet haunt Democrats in 2010, the first order of business appears to be remaking the Republican Party.
Whether it’s the loose confederation of Washington-oriented groups that have played an organizational role or the state-level activists who are channeling grass roots anger into action back home, Tea Party forces are confronting the Republican establishment by backing insurgent conservatives and generating their own candidates—even if it means taking on GOP incumbents.
“We will be a headache for anyone who believes the Constitution of the United States…isn’t to be protected,” said Dick Armey, chairman of the anti-tax and limited government advocacy group FreedomWorks, which helped plan and promote the Tea Parties, town hall protests and the September ‘Taxpayer March’ in Washington. “If you can’t take it seriously, we will look for places of other employment for you.”
“We’re not a partisan organization, and I think many Republicans are disappointed we are not,” added Armey, a former GOP congressman.
Senator DeMint Goes to Honduras
Posted by Brendan in Foreign Policy on October 11, 2009
South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint just returned from Honduras, where he examined the situation there after the failed power grab of president Manuel Zelaya. Read his account in The Wall Street Journal to understand why President Obama is dead wrong in his support of the leftist president, and why the White House is now trying to find a rationale for this foreign policy blunder. Here is a short excerpt:
The presidential election is on schedule for Nov. 29. Under Honduras’s one-term-limit, Mr. Zelaya could not have sought re-election anyway. Current President Roberto Micheletti—who was installed after Mr. Zelaya’s removal, per the Honduran Constitution—is not on the ballot either. The presidential candidates were nominated in primary elections almost a year ago, and all of them—including Mr. Zelaya’s former vice president—expect the elections to be free, fair and transparent, as has every Honduran election for a generation.
Indeed, the desire to move beyond the Zelaya era was almost universal in our meetings. Almost.
In a day packed with meetings, we met only one person in Honduras who opposed Mr. Zelaya’s ouster, who wishes his return, and who mystifyingly rejects the legitimacy of the November elections: U.S. Ambassador Hugo Llorens.
More media hits for FreedomWorks

Congrats to local activist Debbie Dooley for her fine work fighting big government in Gwinnet County, Georgia! The Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote an article about Debbie’s work there.
Debbie Dooley, who heads Gwinnett Freedomworks, said taxpayers deserve a detailed description of why a property tax increase is needed now. She said her group is going to ask for a specific accounting of where cuts have been made and whether more cuts can be made to noncore services.
“My phone has been ringing off the hook,” said Dooley, whose group helped rally opposition to the earlier tax increase. “People want us to get involved again.”
And here is a great piece from the Cape Coral Daily Breeze on our event in North Fort Myers earlier in the week. Mary Rakovich, the person that I would argue started the whole tea party movement, put on a fantastic event!
More than 500 people registered for the FreedomWorks rally held Wednesday at the Shell Factory & Nature Park in North Fort Myers…
Of the group, Armey said, “We’re about smaller, more responsible government, effectively doing on a cost-effective basis only doing what is necessary to do and authorized by the constitution…
Local organizer and Cape Coral resident Mary Rakovich said she never got involved with politics until last year.
“I got interested in politics for the first time in my life last summer,” she said. “I got on the Internet and started reading about our candidates.”
Rakovich joined FreedomWorks and went to an activist training. She then met Brendan Steinhauser, director of federal and state campaigns and grassroots coordinator, and decided to become more involved.
“They are an excellent resource, especially for someone who is just learning to be an activist and doesn’t have a clue of what’s going on, like I was,” Rakovich said.
Finally, writer Tim Carney of the DC Examiner discusses the hypocrisy of the left in the health care debate, pointing out that pro-Obamacare lobbyists are getting treated differently than anti-Obamacare lobbyists (Dick Armey).
The difference? The former–Dick Armey of Texas–was opposing President Obama’s push for new health-care mandates, regulations, taxes, and spending programs. The latter–Bob Dole of Kansas–supported this “reform.” ..
Dick Armey, meanwhile, was assailed as a scheming lobbyist when he–as head of the free-market activist group FreedomWorks–rallied the public this summer against Obama’s plan.
All in all, a good press week again for our organization. Thanks to all the grassroots leaders and activists that are keeping up the good fight! You have earned the respect and credibility that you deserve.
FreedomWorks appears on a Swedish television show
Posted by Brendan in FreedomWorks on October 8, 2009
I don’t speak Swedish, but you can understand FreedomWorks’ Josh Eboch and Matt Kownacki, when they appear in this Swedish television program about the healthcare debate in the U.S. The program has footage from the September 12th March on Washington, which brought hundreds of thousands of freedom-loving Americans to the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building for a protest.
Fast forward to 34 minutes into the show to see Josh’s interview, and coverage of a discussion between Matt and Josh at FreedomWorks HQ.
As far as I can tell, these guys did a great job for us! Now, does anyone know Swedish?
