Investor’s Business Daily quotes me on the Senate healthcare vote

I talked with David Hogberg of Investor’s Business Daily yesterday about the Senate healthcare vote and the reaction from the grassroots. I explained to him that folks were not happy with the vote, but that grassroots activists would definitely be communicating their outrage in the weeks to come.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

“Activists were a little bit frustrated by the procedural vote on Saturday,” said Brendan Steinhauser, director of federal and state campaigns at conservative FreedomWorks. “But they do realize that this battle has just begun in the Senate. I expect activists from around the country to communicate to the three or four senators on the fence how they feel.”

Landrieu, Nelson and Lincoln have all expressed concern with the public option, the bill’s cost and abortion language. (Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., caucusing with the Democrats, has said he will oppose any bill with a public option.)

FreedomWorks will be working with activists in Louisiana, Arkansas and Nebraska to keep the pressure on these senators in the coming weeks. We still believe that Sen. Harry Reid has a tough road ahead trying to move his monstrous 2.5 trillion dollar tax-hiking Obamacare bill through the full Senate.

Tactics for opposing Obamacare

The new Rasmussen poll about Obamacare is encouraging – only 38% of Americans support it. As people find out that the legislation would increase the cost of healthcare, raise taxes by $500 billion and cut Medicare for seniors, opposition grows.

Those of us trying to defeat this monstrosity of a big government scheme should continue to put pressure on legislators, and continue to publicly debate the bill to drive public opinion in our favor. Many activists were disheartened by Saturday night’s Senate vote, but we must remember that the odds are against the Senate passing anything this year. And we must make our voices heard more loudly, and with more specific focus on the costs of Obamacare.

Here are some tactics that some activists have forgotten to employ, in our effort to defeat Obamacare. Protesting is one tactic that is effective, but we can’t just protest. Here are some other ways to make an impact in your state.

1. District office visits. Find out where your Senators have local offices and pay their staff a visit. Bring your friends, family and doctor to the meeting. Bring copies of petitions signed by your neighbors, as well as hand-written letters from fellow activists. This will deliver a strong message.

2. Letters to the editor. Every Senate staffer is going to pay attention to the letters in the local newspapers. Influencing the debate in the local newspapers is crucial to affecting public opinion in your state. Try to submit concise letters to the editor of every newspaper in the state, and encourage your friends to do the same.

3. Old-fashioned pamphleteering. Grab your friends, print out some talking points and petitions, and head over to the local doctor’s office, hospital or clinic. Hand out information to doctors, nurses and patients about how Obamacare will harm healthcare in this country. Ask people to sign your petition, and have them call your Senators immediately to tell them to vote NO on Obamacare. Get your own doctor and nurses involved in this battle, and you will help turn the tide against Obamacare in your state.

These are three of the most important tactics you can use to wage the intellectual and political battle necessary to defeat Obamacare. We have to continue to make the arguments in private and public conversations. Keep up the fight, and check back here for more ideas on what to do.

Thanks for everything you do for freedom.

Congressman Tom Price authors a resolution thanking those who marched on DC on 912

Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) has introduced a House Resolution (H. Res 870) thanking the hundreds of thousands of participants in the 9/12 March on Washington. Check out the video he recorded in the same spot where the massive protest occurred a few months ago.

Here is an excerpt from the text of the resolution:

Expressing gratitude and appreciation to the individuals and families who participated in the Taxpayer March on Washington on September 12, 2009.

Whereas, on September 12, 2009, hundreds of thousands of American patriots, who refuse to sit idly by as the Federal Government advances skyrocketing deficits, taxpayer-funded bailouts, pork-barrel projects, burdensome taxes, unaccountable policy czars, command-and-control energy policy, and a government takeover of health care, came to Washington, DC, to show their disapproval;

Whereas individuals also wanted to convey their displeasure with the future tax increases that will be required to pay for deficit-financed spending;

Whereas these individuals understand that the fundamental American principles of limited government and personal liberty are under direct assault;

Whereas this dedicated group of freedom-loving Americans believe in open, accountable, responsible, constitutionally based government;

Whereas hundreds of buses, multiple caravans of cars from across the country, and many individually chartered flights, as well as thousands of lone-traveling cars and trucks, brought these patriots to Washington, DC, solely for this event;

Whereas these individuals endured considerable personal expense to get to the march, including transportation and lodging expenses, as well as lost wages in many instances;

Whereas estimates of the number of people who peacefully marched from Freedom Plaza to the West Front of the U.S. Capitol on September 12, 2009, range as high as 1,700,000 marchers;

Whereas all 50 States were represented in the march;

Whereas this event is considered to be the largest ever gathering of fiscal conservatives in Washington, DC;

Whereas special accolades are due to the grassroots citizens organizations across the country who helped individuals exercise their constitutionally protected First Amendment rights in the Nation’s capital; and

Whereas when the current trends of government expansion and freedom retrenchment are reversed, it will be due in large part to the efforts of the hundreds of thousands who marched on Washington, DC, on September 12, 2009: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives expresses its gratitude and appreciation to the hundreds of thousands of people who marched on Washington, DC, on September 12, 2009, to show their love of liberty and their grievance with recent government actions.

Obama’s stimulus failed to “save or create” jobs

The Washington Examiner’s Byron York has an excellent piece on how Obama and the Democrats have failed to enact policies that “save or create” jobs. The trillion dollar stimulus program was an utter failure, as conservatives pointed out it would be. Unemployment is now 10.2%, and if you include those who are underemployed or who have stopped looking for work, that number climbs to 17%.

Here is an excerpt from York’s piece:

The only way to prevent unemployment from approaching 10 percent, Obama said, was to pass the stimulus, which in the end cost $787 billion. With the stimulus, the administration claimed, unemployment would stay below 8 percent. Without it, joblessness could climb to 9 percent.

Now, with the stimulus passed and unemployment at 10.2 percent, the White House is not only distracted by health care but divided on its own record. On one hand, Obama and Vice President Biden say the stimulus is working, and will work more in the future. On the other, top economic adviser Christina Romer suggests the stimulus has run its course and unemployment will likely “remain at severely elevated levels” through 2010.

Conservatives should continue to hang the unemployment numbers around Obama’s neck, since he said his stimulus plan would save or create jobs and prevent this country from experiencing double digit unemployment. We need to make the point that big government policies don’t create jobs, they destroy them. And passing the terrible ideas of “Cap and Tax” and Obamacare would only add to the job-killing destruction of “progressive” public policies.

Report from today’s anti-PelosiCare rally

I just got back to the office from the big anti-PelosiCare rally on the East side of the US Capitol building. There were between 2000 and 3000 people in attendance, which blew away everyone’s expectations. We worked with Rep. Steve King’s office to put this event together in less than 24 hours. Not a bad turnout for such short notice! Thanks to all the patriots that showed up yet again for today’s rally.

After the event, Conservative Congressmen rolled out the entire bill up to the East Steps of the Capitol Building. It was quite a sight.

I’ve been watching Politico.com for updates on the debate happening right now inside the Capitol. I think that every vulnerable Democrat that votes for this bill tonight should see his Republican opponent in next year’s election raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in the next week.

Here are pics from today’s protest:

25,000 Patriots Storm Capitol Hill to Derail Pelosi-Care

Earlier today 25,000 patriotic Americans flooded Capitol Hill with one voice: “Kill the Pelosi-Care Bill.” Grassroots Americans from around the country came to DC to answer Rep. Michele Bachmann’s call from last week to join her in lobbying against Pelosi-Care. We will have some great pictures up on FreedomWorks.org soon.

Here is C-Span’s coverage of the event, hosted by House Republicans. My speech is 1 hour and 35 minutes in.

Also, check out the coverage of the rally from Fox News and Newsmax. Here is my quote in the Fox News article:

Organizers of the Thursday rally, particularly Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., made a point of calling on those in attendance to be courteous toward their lawmakers as they sought meetings with them. They were no doubt mindful of the reputation for rowdiness protesters at town hall meetings over the August recess earned after countless videos were publicized of them shouting at their lawmakers. Organizers honed their outfit Thursday with a clear message: change somebody’s mind on Capitol Hill, don’t just yell.

“Be cordial, be orderly, be an effective communicator,” Freedomworks’ Brendan Steinhauser told the crowd. “There are a lot of members of Congress who have not made their mind up.”

Long lines formed outside the House office buildings Thursday as those in attendance tried to corner their lawmakers. Burke said plenty of them were able to arrange meetings.

Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., for instance, had about 300-400 people show up at his office, according to spokesman George Burke. Burke said Connolly spoke directly with some constituents and staff members were available to answer their questions as well. Burke said most of the people were polite, and that Connolly has not made a decision on how he will vote.

The vote on Pelosi-Care is scheduled for Saturday, and you can be sure that we will be watching closely to see how moderate Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats vote on this bill. Today was another historic day for freedom, as thousands of people entered the Rayburn, Longworth and Cannon House office buildings to meet with their Representatives. Let’s hope that they heard the message this time around.

Transcript from Anderson Cooper 360 last night

For those interested in last night’s AC 360 segment on the conservative uprising, below is a partial transcript. They aired a couple of sentences from my interview, which is what I expected. Here is the link to a Newsbusters blog post about the show, and the narrative that it told.

TOM FOREMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): If waves of angry conservatives gave Democrats a scare last summer, they may be terrifying Republicans this fall, by forcing the party to choose between satisfying its base and attracting more moderate Americans.

A case in point: New York’s 23rd Congressional District, a Republican stronghold for more than a century.

The GOP candidate, Dede Scozzafava had been favored to win, a moderate who fit nicely into the National Party’s plans to claw back middle voters, especially women. But that was before big name conservatives like Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh made it clear they wanted her out and a more conservative candidate in; calling Scozzafava a Republican in name only, a rhino whose Democratic leanings have tainted the whole idea of a moderate Republican.

RUSH LIMBAUGH, RADIO SHOW HOST: We can say that she’s guilty of widespread bestiality. She has screwed every rhino in the country. Everyone can see just how phony and dangerous they are.

FOREMAN: Under the onslaught Scozzafava’s numbers crumbled. She suspended her campaign and Doug Hoffman, the candidate for the Conservative Party is now the chief challenger to Democrat Bill Owens.

For organizers of those two TEA party events who call this a grassroots victory, that’s fine. They say they frankly want conservatives to win and they don’t care if they’re Republican or not.

Brendan Steinhauser…

BRENDAN STEINHAUSER, FREEDOM WORKS: The grassroots uprising on the right is not about the party. It’s not about getting Democrats out of office. It’s not about, you know, ending President Obama’s tenure. What it’s about is electing conservatives to Congress, conservatives to the Senate.

FOREMAN: The driving force of this conservative surge is money: outrage over President Obama’s expansive government, the soaring deficit and rising unemployment. Social issues such as gay marriage and abortion are clearly taking a backseat. Yet, at conservative bastions such as The Heritage Foundation, folks like Rory Cooper are crowing.

RORY COOPER, THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION: And you’re seeing that the conservative movement not only isn’t dead but it’s thriving.

FOREMAN (on camera): So Republican leaders have a tiger by the tail. An impressive force that some believe could drag their party back into power if it can be tamed. But if it can’t, others fear it could just as easily tear their party apart — Anderson.

My interview with The Hartford Courant

I interviewed with Daniela Altimari of The Hartford Courant today about the conservative uprising in New York State and elsewhere. Here is an excerpt from the piece:

The political revolt in New York that claimed the candidacy of moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava could have broad repercussions for the U.S. Senate race in Connecticut.

FreedomWorks, a national group that has supported Tea Party protests across the country, played a key role in that contest — “we’ve done over 30,000 phone calls” in the district, said Brendan Steinhauser, director of federal and state campaigns for FreedomWorks…

Steinhauser said FreedomWorks will be a player in pivotal U.S. Senate contests in Florida and Pennyslvania. “We’re absolutely looking at Connecticut as well…I think we’re going to be involved in [the U.S. Senate race] in a big way,” he said.

The article examines whether conservatives can nominate a conservative in the Connecticut GOP primary for U.S. Senate – and what that means for the GOP’s success in the state. My readers can be sure that FreedomWorks will make our voice know in Connecticut, and around the country when it comes to who the true conservatives are in the elections.
