Dave Weigel, a reporter known for covering conservatives fairly, has a piece up at The Washington Independent that’s well worth reading. He notes that conservatives are fighting back against the smears, lies and propaganda against them. Here is my quote:

Brendan Steinhauser, the director of campaigns for FreedomWorks, helped put together two days of rallies against health care legislation on Capitol Hill. Much of the coverage of those rallies focused on alleged incidents of racial and sexual slurs against Democratic members of Congress who were walking into the building for negotiations over the vote. And that, to Steinhauser, was ridiculous.

“Ninety-nine percent of the people out there were good, patriotic Americans,” Steinhauser told TWI. “Those are our people. But what we heard about were these very few incidents of alleged racial slurs which I haven’t seen evidence of. I’d like to see the video if it’s out there.”

Brendan Steinhauser, director of federal and state campaigns with the conservative group FreedomWorks, said he will be “reminding” activists to focus on “peaceful political efforts” and that any violence “will only set the movement back.”

But he noted that his office received a bomb threat last September before a big protest in Washington, D.C.

“I think there is a double standard when it comes to covering how extremist elements on the left and the right behave,” he said in an e-mail. “Both types of extremists should be condemned by the media and the rest of us who do not engage in such acts.”

Here are a couple of news stories that mention the next steps of the conservative revolution sweeping the country. This article, in The Washington Independent, captures the feelings some of us were having outside the US capitol building Sunday night as the vote was going on inside. And this article in Fox News talks about our plans for making Obamacare the big issue in the 2010 midterm elections.

I expect conservatives to fight Obamacare in the courts, in state legislatures and in the battle for public opinion leading up to the midterm elections. This law is toxic, and the conservative movement must remind the public which party has been fighting against Obamacare, and which party has been jamming it down their throats. The ultimate test of public opinion will come in November. Rest assured that we will remember in November.

I sat down with David Morgan of Reuters a few days ago for this story. It’s a pretty good piece, and does a good job discussing the complex relationship between the tea parties and the GOP. Here is the part that mentions yours truly. I was talking about the moment after Rick Santelli’s famous rant against the bailouts.

“It went viral,” said Brendan Steinhauser, director of federal and state campaigns at FreedomWorks. “It was a beautiful moment for us because it’s not like you could create that if you wanted to.”

We have entered the final phase of the battle against Obamacare 2.0. Please try to keep the volume turned WAY up this week with phone calls, emails, faxes and letters to your Representative. Try to direct as much attention toward their local district offices in your area. With phone lines jammed in Washington, you will have a much better chance of reaching someone in the Representative’s office with the local numbers. You can find out where the local offices are by clicking here. If you have some time this week, please try to visit these local offices and deliver your message in person. That is the most effective thing we can do right now to stop this bill.
