What will happen if the US leaves Iraq?

Monday, February 19th, 2007

One writer, Robert Dreyfuss of Washington Monthly, says that there will not be chaos if the US leaves Iraq. Congressman John Murtha echoed this sentiment the other day, citing opinion polls of Iraqis. He stated that he did not believe there would be a bloodbath if the US leaves Iraq. Below in an excerpt of the Dreyfuss piece.

Much of Washington assumes that leaving Iraq will lead to
a bigger bloodbath. It’s time to question that assumption.

“..if it was foolish to accept the best-case assumptions that led us to invade Iraq, it’s also foolish not to question the worst-case assumptions that undergird arguments for staying. Is it possible that a quick withdrawal of U.S. forces will lead to a dramatic worsening of the situation? Of course it is, just as it’s possible that maintaining or escalating troops there could fuel the unrest. But it’s also worth considering the possibility that the worst may not happen: What if the doomsayers are wrong?”

Although it’s convenient for the Bush administration to claim that al-Qaeda is a Comintern-like international force, it is really a loose ideological movement, and its Iraq component is fed largely by jihadists who flock to the country because they see the war as a holy cause. Once the United States withdraws, Iraq will no longer be a magnet for that jihad.

Iraq War resolution fails in Senate

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Despite all the media fanfare and soundbites, the Senate Democrats’ attempt to pass a nonbinding resolution condemning President Bush’s “surge” policy was defeated by Republicans.

It is my opinion that if the Democrats want to stop the war, or simply prevent more troops from heading to Iraq, they should do something decisive like cut off the funding. They should take a principled stance instead of constantly playing political games.

The Washington Post has the story.

al Sadr flees Iraq… Proof that surge will work?

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

According to Fox News, radical cleric Moqtada al Sadr has reportedly fled from Baghdad to Iran. Bloggers are citing this as proof that he is fleeing for his life before the troop reinforcements arrive in Baghdad.

If true, this might make the Democrats look really silly given their opposition to the troop surge. Just as they are offering their non-binding resolutions in the Congress, events might be changing the terms of the debate.

Captain’s Quarters is covering the story here.

Deal reached with North Korea

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

The Washington Post has the story.

I, for one, don’t trust the evil regime in Pyongyang. But at least we are “giving peace a chance.” If diplomacy works, great. But even if it doesn’t, the Left will still blame President Bush.

Lil Kim broke his promise once before. Let’s not make the same mistake twice. Trust, but verify.

Senator John Cornyn authors resolution in support of troops

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Despite the political point-scoring and piling on President Bush regarding his troop surge policy, one Senator is standing strong in support of the troops and of the President. I am not sure whether the surge policy will work, but I admire Sen. Cornyn’s strong statesman-like position on this politically unpopular war.

I am working to get the text of the resolution from his staff and will post it as soon as I get it.
If you support Sen. Cornyn’s resolution, which will likely be debated in the Senate next week, please contact his office and let him know. Also, contact other Senators and tell them to vote for his resolution. You can find their contact information by visiting www.senate.gov

An American Muslim speaks out against Islamists

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Here is a great piece by M. Zuhdi Jasser, a courageous Muslim leader who is trying to encourage Muslim Americans to take a stand against Islamists.

He writes,

“the public face of American Muslim activity against terror — and the against the ideology that feeds it — has so far been inadequate. Other than press-release condemnations, there has been virtually no palpable public effort from the greater Muslim community in this regard.”

Leftists descend upon Washington to protest the war on terrorism

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

As I have reported elsewhere, most of the anti-war demonstrators in Washington tend to be led by a far-left contingent of socialists and communists.

Today on the National Mall, thousands gathered again to protest the war, call for the impeachment of President Bush and his trial for war crimes.

Funny how these same folks want to see and end to the genocide in Darfur, but don’t believe that violence should be used to stop the killing. I guess they don’t see the irony in their position.

General Petraeus says Senate resolutions would embolden enemy

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

The Washington Times reports today that the new commander in Iraq, Lt. General David Petraeus, testified that Senate resolutions condemning the President’s new plan in Iraq would embolden the terrorists.

I have not seen the General’s comments reported elsewhere. Biased media? What biased media? Below are excerpts from the story.

Mr. McCain, who supports a larger troop increase, asked what the results would be if senators “tell those troops that we support you, but we are convinced that you cannot accomplish your mission. … What effect does that have on the morale?”
“Well, it would not be a beneficial effect, sir,” Gen. Petraeus replied during a confirmation hearing to four-star rank before the Senate Armed Services Committee. “Obviously, a commander would like to go forward with as much flexibility as he can achieve.”
Mr. Lieberman tried to pull Gen. Petraeus further into the upcoming Senate debate. He asked what effect an anti-surge Senate resolution would have on the enemy. After praising the U.S. system of open political debate, the general added, “having said that, a commander in such an endeavor would obviously like the enemy to feel that there’s no hope.”
“A Senate-passed resolution of disapproval for this new strategy in Iraq would give the enemy some encouragement,” Mr. Lieberman said, to which Gen. Petraeus answered, “That’s correct, sir.”

Chavez to nationalize industries, erode freedoms

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

The actions of Venezuelan socialist strongman Hugo Chavez should remind freedom-lovers everywhere of the danger of authoritarianism around the world.

His comments are frightening in their disregard for freedom, free enterprise and free trade. He is dismantling the right of the press to say what it wants, and the right of people to own and keep what they earn.

Here is the story. Excerpts from the story are below.

– “We’re heading toward socialism, and nothing and no one can prevent it.” — Hugo Chavez
– Last week, Chávez decided to not renew the broadcast license of RCTV, a Caracas television station long critical of his administration. That move prompted swift condemnation from press freedom groups.

– “I move forward with my request for a revolutionary enabling law,” he said. “We already have the document prepared. We are making the final revisions, and we solicit special powers.”
