Weekend Update

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Sorry for the hiatus from posting the last few days. I was back in Texas for my sister’s wedding. It was a great time and I got to see a lot of old friends, and make new ones. Now my sister and her husband are off to Fiji for their honeymoon!

I’ll be back to my normal blogging schedule tomorrow.

Until then, Feliz Cinco De Mayo!

Nickelodeon brainwashing children with left-wing drivel

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Hat tip to Michelle Malkin for bringing this to light.

Watch this left-wing propaganda video hosted by Linda Ellerbee and then call the producers at Nickelodeon. The person to contact is  Alison Dexter at 818-736-3000.

If they are going to do a piece on young activists, that’s fine. But they should at least provide a balanced look at conservatives, liberals, libertarians, greens, etc.. Instead, this propaganda piece is meant to indoctrinate young children into the left-wing mindset. Not that I watch the t.v. station anyway, but now I will encourage a boycott of Nick.

Update on Texas State University free speech campaign

Friday, October 5th, 2007

I called the office of student affairs at Texas State University today and they told me that they were not attempting to stifle the free speech of one of their students, Jessica Irwin. The person I talked to said that the university received a letter from the ADC about the possibility of an event called Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. The official said that the university then contacted the David Horowitz Freedom Center and asked who the TSU contact for the Terrorism Awareness Project was. According to the school official, the Horowitz Freedom Center gave them Jessica’s name. I have not heard back from the center about how they got her name and contact information.
The university then told Jessica to come to a meeting, and at the meeting proceeded to ask her whether she was planning an Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. The official told me that the reason for this meeting was to “make sure the students would be safe” in case the event were to occur on campus. But when the university found out that Jessica was not organizing such an event, the official claims they let the matter drop.

This is not what Jessica told me. Jessica said that she was asked to prepare a written statement indicating that she was not taking part in the project, nor was her chapter of College Republicans. Jessica also added that the university grilled her about whether her group was planning to protest illegal immigration. Jessica was “strongly urged” not to hold a Catch an “Illegal Immigrant” event.
When Jessica tried to submit her statement to the University Star, the student newspaper, the editor did not run it. On top of that, various reporters have been calling her and CR chairman Traci Adams, asking them about the event, even though Jessica told them that CR had never planned to hold such an event. Jessica has sent the statement to the newspaper and the university, but it has not been published.
Something is rotten in the state of Texas. There seems to be a pattern of university officials and student journalists refusing to leave Jessica and Traci alone. The two might even have to face a panel of administrators or the board of regents to “talk about” the plans they have for various events.

I am not sure what direction this story will go next, but the president of Texas State University and the student affairs office are on notice.

Any violation of freedom of expression or intimidation tactics waged against the College Republicans will be met by a public outcry from concerned friends, alumni and donors of TSU. If the university decides to shut down an event because they don’t like the message, they will encounter a public relations nightmare from groups that are dedicated to protecting students’ free speech rights.

I strongly urge the university to refrain from harassing, intimidating or singling out the CR’s in any way in order to prevent them from holding an event on campus that is within the bounds of political and intellectual discourse.

If you’d like to help Jessica and Traci, please leave a comment and I’ll let you know how you can do so. I will post an update next week on this story as it unfolds.

LiveBlogging from the Defending the Dream Summit

Friday, October 5th, 2007

I am at the Mayflower Hotel in downtown D.C. today, liveblogging the AFP Defending the Dream Summit. The presidential candidates will be giving speeches and mingling with conservative activists this weekend, and there will also be speakers from all ends of the conservative movement.

I will also be taking some video and posting it on YouTube (eventually.) I hope to get some good interviews and video from activists, speakers and other attendees.

I’ll be posting updates throughout the day.

Update: I just watched Fred Thompson speak to the Virginia delegation. I have to say, as much as I like Fred, his performance was simply lackluster. He spoke for only a few minutes and painted very broad strokes. Didn’t his advisers tell him that this crowd is the type of group that he needs to reach in order to get the nomination? I don’t know.

I also spoke to some friends from Austin, including members of The Young Conservatives of Texas and Texans for Fiscal Responsibility. It was good to see some friendly faces.

The event is pretty big. There is lots of energy among the activists and bloggers. I am about to go out an interview some of the folks who are supporting various presidential candidates. I’ll eventually be posting the video on YouTube and linking it on the Freedom Talks Blog.

Corrupt Democrat Rep. William Jefferson Indicted

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

The media is mostly covering the Scooter Libby trial, but the Democrats’ own “culture of corruption” should get at least as much attention as the Republican scandals.

The New York Times buried this story, but here it is.

U.S. Democratic Rep. William Jefferson, accused of hiding $90,000 of intended bribes in his freezer, was charged on Monday with soliciting bribes and paying off a Nigerian official.

The 16-count indictment charges the Louisiana lawmaker with racketeering, soliciting bribes for himself and his family, fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Jefferson, 63, a member of Congress since 1991 whose district includes New Orleans, faces a maximum of 235 years in prison if convicted. His lawyer said Jefferson was innocent and would fight the charges.

Call your Senators about illegal immigration

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

On Monday, be sure to call your Senators and tell them to stand firm against amnesty for illegal aliens, and for enforcing the laws on the books. We need to secure the border first, before we look at a guest worker program or anything else.

You can fax your Senators by clicking here.

Uncontrolled borders have allowed criminals to roam free along our border. The recent deal made by President Bush, John McCain and Ted Kennedy has serious problems. Be sure to voice your concerns to your Senators on Monday, when the cloture vote will happen.

Al Sharpton is a Hypocrite

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

On Monday, Sharpton made an insulting remark about presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who is a Mormon.

“As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyway, so don’t worry, that’s a temporary situation.”

Will the liberal media or the Democrats criticize Sharpton and protest outside his office the way they did when Imus made his “nappy-headed ho’s” comment? Probably not. Perhaps someone on the Left will call for his resignation and go after his sponsors. Doubtful.

We will be waiting and watching to see how the media and the Left react to this religious ‘bigotry’.

Update: Romney says Sharpton’s comments were “bigoted.”

Democrats for the super-rich

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

This is the letter I sent my hometown newspaper, The Austin American-Statesman.

How ironic that Democrat gubernatorial candidate Chris Bell will take $5 million dollars from trial lawyer John O’Quinn.

The party that always clamors that Republicans are “for the rich” is taking money from a super-wealthy man who owns 600 cars worth $100 million. Why doesn’t he practice what Democrats preach and redistribute that wealth to the poor in Texas?

George Soros, the Hollywood crowd and John O’Quinn all have one thing in common: They want the taxpayers to be the ones footing the bill for wasteful social welfare programs as long as they get to keep their mansions and porsches.

This is the height of hypocrisy inherent in the Democrat party’s philosophy.
