Dodd Countrywide Scandal Coverage

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Here is a sampling of coverage of the Dodd/Countrywide Mortgage Scandal that continues to threaten the fate of the mortgage bailout bill before Congress. The vote could happen as soon as today, but the scandal might make senators think twice about bringing the bill up in this climate.

FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey sounds off in The Wall Street Journal.

FreedomWorks President and CEO Matt Kibbe writes a piece on the scandal for Red State.

TownHall.com reporter Amanda Carpenter investigates the role Senator Conrad played in moving the mortgage bailout bill through the Senate. She talks about her story on Fox News.

And FreedomWorks interns make Fox Business News when they protest Senator Dodd’s Countrywide scandal outside Union Station in DC.

Finally, here are some links to other news outlets covering the story.

Hannity and Colmes

Hartford Courant

Jesse Hamilton points out that Dodd has conflicting explanations.

The Kansas City Star calls for an investigation, and points out that the senators involved violated the Senate ethics rules regarding gifts.

National Review has a great piece on the scandal.

UPDATE: Nine Senators have sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid asking him to delay the vote on the mortgage bailout in light of the Dodd/Countrywide scandal. This is an encouraging development!

Bailout Backlash — CNN reports on AngryRenter.com

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

FreedomWorks’ project AngryRenter.com has been noticed by journalists over at CNN Money. Check out the article online about our opposition to the mortgage bailout. It quotes my co-worker Adam Brandon.

“A third of the American public rents. They’re saying I’ve been saving for a mortgage for years. I could have jumped in on a subprime loan too. Now I’m going to have to pay for a government bailout.”

Be sure to sign the petition over at AngryRenter.com!

Dick Armey’s advice to John McCain

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

My boss Dick Armey has penned a column for Real Clear Politics that contains advice for John McCain. Hopefully his economic advisers are paying attention.

Sen. McCain has already proved his willingness to take bold free-market stances. His attacks on earmarks, despite ambivalence from party leadership, have shown him to be a leader in the fight against government waste. Who else would campaign against ethanol subsidies while in Iowa? Meanwhile, few have defended free trade as ardently as McCain, even as public support for open trade dwindles. Whatever criticisms some might have of the man, no one could say he lacks political courage.
